BALFOUR DECLARATION&LIONEL ROTHSCHILD: top of page
a brief but official statement of the British government in 1917 expressing sympathy with Zionist aspirations to establish a Jewishhomeland in the Land of Israel. The statement was released in the form of
aletter from Lord Balfour, the British Foreign Secretary, to Lord Lionel Rothschild, a supporter of the Zionist movement.It said: "His Majesty's Government views with favor the establishment in Palestine of a nationalhome for the Jewish people and will use the best endeavors to facilitate the achievement ofthis object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil andreligious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or rights and political status enjoyedby Jews in any other country." The statement became a milestonein Zionist history.
